Premarital sex is a sexual activity practiced by people who are unmarried. Premarital sex, also known to be “non-marital sex” is considered a moral issue which is a taboo in many cultures and considered a sin in some religions, but since the 1960s , it has become widely accepted, especially in western countries. Religiously, premarital sex is referred to as “Fornication” which is basically having sexual intercourse before marriage. This is counted as a sin in religions like Christianity, as seen in 1st Corinthians 6 vs9 in the Bible and also Islam in Quran 17:32 in the Quran . The same goes for Judaism and some other religions in which their women are expected to be virgins till marriage.
The major reason behind someone thinking of having premarital sex is solely on one’s past experience. This is due to the fact that if one hasn’t heard, seen nor gotten involved in a situation close to it, it wouldn’t come to one’s mind to think of such because you wouldn’t know anything of such. This also holds that the mind has a huge role to play in a person’s life when it comes to premarital sex because it would have been thought of by the individual before he or she gets himself or herself involved in such. On this note, other causes of premarital sex are subgroups under one’s past experiences which are, lack of proper sex education, curiosity to explore what sexual activity is all about, sexual contents portrayed in the media, not wanting to get married, desire for a child, peer pressure, ignorance of the effects of premarital sex and so on.
The effects of premarital sex are what the “unmarried” should think about but are ignorant of and these effects destroy people’s lives, if not well managed. One of the effects is the loss of virginity. Virginity is to be given to the most important person in your life and this has to be done after marriage. One’s virginity is the most precious thing one has for his or her spouse.
Once someone loses it, it cannot be gotten back . To add to this, a female who loses her virginity is prone to unwanted pregnancy if she practices unprotected or loose-protected premarital sex. These pregnancies are usually unplanned and unwanted and this can completely change the victim’s life for bad. They either make the victim commit abortion (murder of the child) or dumping the baby after birth so as not to have contact with it anymore .
This could also lead to having illegitimate child or children. Legitimacy in western common law is the status of a child born to parents who are legally married to each other while illegitimacy is the status of a child born outside marriage. This can also be referred to as “Bastardy” and can destabilize the life of the parents , especially the mother. Moreover, this could lead the parents of the child into a forced marriage. These victims might not even know each other but found themselves in a situation where they had sex which led to an unwanted pregnancy, making their parents or relatives force them into getting married. This isn’t the best for the “ now-couples” because they sacrificed an opportunity to have a good life for a short period of pleasure which might not even last for more than 30 minutes.
Furthermore, another effect of premarital sex is Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). These diseases reveal themselves through burning, itching, oozing and pus-filled sores on the victim’s genitals. A moment of pleasure with someone you may not even know should not be something to do which may even lead to a disease which you can battle for the rest of your life, but people are very ignorant of this as they only think about the pleasure they get for only that moment. It just can be compared to a lifetime prison sentence because most of these diseases are incurable.
In some cases, premarital sex can cause sexual addiction. This is a hypersexual disorder also known as sex addiction which makes an individual unable to control his or her sexual urge, behaviour or thought. Sexual addiction arrests the victim’s psychological and social development and this can be an effect of premarital sex especially in cases of rape. Psychologically, these victims would feel guilty, emotionally distressed, broken or almost-broken relationships, self-hatred and spiritual bondage which could lead one of them or both in some cases into thinking of committing suicide and at the same time, murder of the unborn children. They would think a lot and this may lead to a high blood pressure in some cases.
In preventing premarital sex and all the troubles, abstinence is the key and in doing this, the family has a major role to play especially in raising children and teaching them to accept people, both men and women as equal partners of life and not as objects of fulfilling lust.
